All about the Tree Fern: a key element for my Anthurium

Tree Fern (or Tree Fern Fiber) is a natural substrate that is increasingly popular among Araceae collectors. These are tree fern fibers sourced directly from New Zealand. This material is an excellent growing medium for plant development, particularly those requiring optimal aeration and good moisture retention.

In this article, we will see what Tree Fern is, its benefits, the problems linked to its origin, and how to use it effectively in your substrates .

What is the Tree Fern?

Tree Fern Fiber comes from the fibrous trunk of tree ferns, an ancient plant species that grows primarily in the forests of New Zealand.

Thanks to its light and spongy texture, it combines efficient drainage and excellent water retention , making it an ideal material for a wide range of plants, including epiphytes, aroids and orchids .

Why use Tree Fern? Its main benefits

💧 Optimal moisture retention
Tree Fern Fiber retains water without creating soggy patches. It ensures constant hydration for plants while preventing root asphyxiation.

🌿 Light and airy structure
Its fibrous and porous structure allows for excellent drainage and promotes root aeration. A key point for plants sensitive to excess moisture.

♻️ Durable and reusable
Unlike other organic substrates, this material decomposes slowly, ensuring stable support for several years.

🌍 100% natural and non-toxic
Tree Fern Fiber is safe for plants, reptiles and amphibians , making it an excellent choice for terrariums and vivariums .

Ethically sourced
My partner's supplier, Fernwood PlantScraper is the only Tree Fern producer in New Zealand that guarantees harvesting that respects natural ecosystems .

Beware of illegal sources and ecological impact

As Tree Fern becomes increasingly sought after, this leads to the emergence of unethical and sometimes illegal sources of supply .

--> Southeast Asia : Here, the fern species used are strictly prohibited from importation (CITES) , as they are often illegally collected from the wild , threatening local biodiversity.

--> Circumventing the rules : Despite the bans, some Asian companies manufacture decorative products from Tree Fern , which are easier to import into Europe. These products are then fraudulently resold as substrate , thus circumventing the regulations.

It is better to choose an ethical supplier to ensure a legal and sustainable product.

How do I use the Tree Fern?

In my own substrates, I use Tree Fern mainly for my Anthuriums , with two recipes adapted to the different growth stages:

📌 For seeds and seedlings :

--> Fine blend promoting moisture retention and aeration .

--> Allows optimal root development from a very young age.

📌 For mature plants :

--> More structured mix, ensuring drainage and root support .

--> Adapted to the specific needs of large leaves and thick roots .

Now this element is an integral part of my Anthurium culture, and I would have a hard time doing without it! In fact, I find that the fibers of the tree fern offer a very favorable support to the Anthurium in addition to its draining and moisture-retaining effect.
You can also use these same tree fern mixes in pot risers and stakes .

Where to find Tree Fern?

There are several resellers in Europe and I personally buy from my Partner PlantScraper, who chooses a sustainable and ethical Tree Fern.
If you use my affiliate code YOUNGBOTANIST, you get 10% off their website, and therefore on the Tree Fern!

Conclusion

Tree Fern Fiber is a valuable resource for plant addicts , offering unique moisture retention and drainage properties. Its use in substrates significantly improves plant health, provided you choose an ethical supplier and ensure the product is sourced in an environmentally friendly manner.

🔥 And you, have you already tried Tree Fern Fiber in your substrates? If you haven't yet, I invite you to try it as soon as possible!
